Review of The Oxford Murders (2008) by Matthew J — 21 Jun 2008
If I wanted to watch something about murders in Oxford I'd rather watch Morse or Lewis. The main problem with this film is Elijah Wood who doesn't come across as clever or particularly intuitive and he doesn't convince in the final 'I know who did it' speech and that sex scene with the spaghetti was just awful.
John Hurt was equally patronising and kind of dull. This film was kind of saved by the supporting cast: in her brief appearance Anna Massey was brilliant in her Miss Havisham-esque role while Jim Carter as the police detective and Burn Gorman as the Russian student were both equally impressive.
The central plot about codes and unravelling mysteries has all been done before to much better effect and even the scenery of Oxford itself couldn't save this film from being an under-par episode of Morse or Midsomer.
