Review of The Nice Guys (2016) by Jamie J — 02 Oct 2016
As a testament to the quality of the Nice Guys, if a sequel to this delightfully surreal black comedy were announced tomorrow I for one would be delighted. The buddy movie is a lost art when it comes to modern film making, cinema goers would prefer a new Scary Movie or Bridget Jones to a new Lethal Weapon. So you should probably count yourselves lucky that films like this, In Bruges or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang even got off the drawing board.
Yes The Nice Guys is a very silly film, but the humour is all based around the fairly dark premise of 70's porn and exploitation, imagine if Boogie Nights cracked a joke or two and you won't be too far off. You have Russell Crowe being paid to beat people up, and Ryan Gosling spending most of his time getting beaten up. It kinda works, the duo work well off each other, even in some of the more dark moments. It's a shame though that main action scene of the film degenerates into a big standard shoot out however, it feels a bit of a let down compared to how fresh the rest of The Nice Guys feels.
The Nice Guys is simply a ridiculously good time, and genuinely laugh out loud funny. Some may be put off by how ridiculously OTT or obvious the visual gags can be, but I for one had a blast.
