Review of The Nice Guys (2016) by Daniel W — 19 Jul 2017
Guns! Smog! Corruption! Message porn! A woman who change hairstyle when she reveals her badness!
The Nice Guys knows exactly when to subvert the gumshoe genre without.
Getting too self-conscious about it. (remember Hudson Hawk?) And when to roll around in cliches. It is, thankfully, possible to get thrown through a window and not get hurt. But that scene could easily been tragic - the movie`s waywardness keeps us in suspense. And the only true sad death follows shortly after that window relief.
Some favourite scenes,: The mostly implied hotel massacre, of course. And the sight of Gosling trying in a gunfight to hide behind a rotating car.
What if it was made in 1977? Elliott Gould and Gene Hackman grabbing the leads. (Gould starred in Robert Altman`s The Long Goodbye. It could make an interesting double bill with our nice guys. Both movie-savvy, but the old one with a different brand of cynicism, perhaps. From a decade where filmmakers thought they could change things.).
Don`t forget the daughter! Jodie Foster or Kristy McNichol. (No Tatum O`Neal, please).
