Review of The Namesake (2006) by Susan R — 15 Oct 2008
The book is a wonderful read by a very talented author, and it is much fuller than the movie, which nonetheless does a very good job at capturing the essence of the book. What makes it different from a typical "foreign film" is that it focuses on individuals and their decisions to incorporate culture and traditions into their lives, while being free to evolve and choose how to live their lives even as they honor and submit to their cultural traditions.
I highly recommend anything by Jumpha Lahari, the author.
