Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Ollie W — 29 Jul 2011
Well acted and menacing, Annaud's murder-mystery set in the moody nooks and crannies of a 14h century Abbey, is atmospheric and gruesome and might boast an excellent cast (Lonsdale, F. Murray Abraham, Slater and Conbery,) but none of this can hide what is essentially an incredibly formulaic and predictable plot.
Enjoyable nonsense though.
