Review of The Mission (1986) by Hans L — 01 Jul 2008
The first half's mechanizations are clunky but a rough start ends smoothly in Roland Joffe and Robert Bolt's damning account of a colonial power struggle between Portugal and Spain. De Niro's mercenary come priest is never fully convincing but Irons is captivating and Chris Menges photography memorable.
It's a good discourse and essentially explores the parallels between the church's and collective social organization's affront to the colonial project.
