Review of The Midnight Meat Train (2008) by Javier G — 28 Sep 2009
Midnight Meat Train defines the expression curiosity killed the cat as basically true. If only he listen to his girlfriend he would'nt be in this predictament. MMT is based on a story by Clive Barker, which I agree that it's the best adaptation I have seen yet. Although there are some aspects I don't agree with the movie.
MMT starts out that Leon(Bradley Cooper) is a photographer who's trying to capture the city like it is. He has a nice girlfriend named Maya(Leslie Bibb) who supports him. One day he's taking pictures of a girl that the next day she disappears. He notices a man who was there that day that she disappeared. He follows him contastnly and sees things that he shouldn't be seeing. The problem with MMT is that it's stlylized, but at the same time it's a good thing. The movie looks great but then it''s a slasher film why are we using cgi for the viloence. Yes it's graphic but I wasn't taken back. I admit I enjoyed the viloence that didn't have cgi. My main point is that filmmakers use shoe string budgets to make realistic effects. That look more scary then the easy why out with cgi.
There is also some plot issues, subway stations have a computerrized board that tells them where the trains are located. So every night a train disappears and nobody cares to ask why. I feel sorry for the clean up crew after the killings. After reading good reviews, I just don't think MMT gave me that impact that I thought it would give. However the acting is very good, the world that director Ryuhei Kitamura creats is very good. The cnematography adds to the upcoming doom and dread. As well as a very creepy and shocking ending. Here's the lowdown I liked the begining, didn't like the middle, but liked the ending. I'm the kind of guy who likes all three. MMT derserves credit for it's craft but it can't redeem it's faults. C+.
