I thought this was one of the best movies I ever saw. part horror, part romance, part drama, the acting was about 1,000x better than most of the crap you see today. it was pretty much impossible not to love Gwynplaine and Dea, and to feel every emotion they feel.
it is truly essential you see this movie.
