Review of The Man Who Laughs (1928) by Leah N — 21 Feb 2009
This film, an exemplary masterpiece of german expressionism, is my new absolute must-see. Leni pulled a few of my shoe-ins for 'must-see' status: german expressionist aesthetique (going so far as to plant Conrad Veidt, aka Cesare of another favourite "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari", in the title role) & Universal Monsters-calibre grandiosity (using Victor Hugo's story, Jack Pierce of "Frankenstein" fame on make-up, & Mary Philbin of Lon Chaney "Phantom of the Opera" fame as leading lady).
