Watching this in a movie theater makes all the difference. I saw it in Seattle in the 70s on the big screen with a bunch of Bogie fans. It was a fabulous experience. Have seen it several times since on VCR / DVD and still love it but that first time was unforgettable.
See it in a theater if you can; if not get a bunch of friends together and make a movie night of it.
