Review of The Magician (1958) by Darren P — 07 Mar 2013
One of the best Bergman films that I have ever seen. The links of an artist and his audience are very self aware and Max Von Sydow does an excellent job in showing how Bergman likely feels about his audience or how an entertainer is a position that is to be scrutinized by law and science.
It's difficult not to feel for Fogler as he hides behind a costume of a beard and top hat and later not recognized after shedding this mask he wears. A heartbreaking truth for the entertainers is that they are misunderstood by their audience and one character who says " I liked your other face better".
