Review of The Magician (1958) by Joe L — 03 Oct 2010
A haunting, overlooked film by bergman about a troupe of performers headed by a disturbingly disguised (and mostly silent) max von sydow. the story uses the concept of illusion to ignite a debate between science and faith.
using every trick at their disposal, the troupe attempts to shake a local scientist of his faith (while also upending the small village's status quo). the end result is creepy, unsettling, and deeply haunting.
impeccably photographed and precisely executed at every turn.
