Review of The Machinist (2004) by Michelle H — 07 Jul 2013
This is a very trippy and deeply psychological film about a factory worker who cant sleep at night and begins to have strange visions and paranoia's that may be real or may be a dream. The trouble starts when a co-worker is horribly injured due to his negligence.
The film is a very interesting character study of a purposeful descent into madness. Christian Bale is fascinating to watch in the roll considering that he looks like a starving holocaust victim. Talk about suffering for your art! I have never seen such dedication to a roll, he is so scary thin that you want to sit him down and force feed him so he does not wither into thin air! Nothing is quite as it seems in this film and the ending is rather shocking and not what you might expect.
It is an unusual film, but very entertaining to watch and a truly unique work of art brought to life by Christians bold and medically dangerous performance.
