Review of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) by Black G — 06 Jan 2004
It is a rare thing to call a movie entirely "evil". But I dare say, this movie wins as one of the most horrible movies I've seen! It is badly casted seeing as the sweet and angelic Spencer Tracy plays the titles role or "roles", it is hard to beleive such a sweet natured man could cause so much pain in one sitting.
..This movie doesn't follow the plot of the original book my Mr. Stevenson at ALL, mainly because women are heavily involved. Lana Turner plays the stereotype angelic blond who loves Mr. Jekyll, and Ingrid Bergman (beleive it or not) plays the seductive bad-girl abused by Mr.
Hyde, or Jekyll's bad half. At the simply drink of a potion, Mr. Jekyll becomes the evil man that is Mr. Hyde; letting him have free reign of his wild side. Everything seems perfect until Mr. Jekyll loses control over who he turns into and everything goes haywire.
Sound thrilling, right? If you want thrills, read the book. If you want to sit through an hour or so of watching the very angelic Spencer Tracy try to belt out evil lines...this is the movie for you. It should be rated "R" for "Really Disturbing"!.
