Review of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) by Anne F — 31 Oct 2009
Colin Smith has been sent to Borstal for his part in a robbery, whilst there his skill as a cross-country runner is recognised. Through flashbacks we see how he ended up in trouble, see his hard family life and the lack of opportunities available to him.
The film is about choices, we see why he has made some of his choices and how he has rebelled against what is expected by society. The cross-country run in which he runs at the end of the film is beautifully shot, and full of suspense - what choices will he make?
