Review of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962) by Jonathan B — 13 Nov 2009
A subtle performance by Tom Courtenay and a really great story were squandered by an unfocused script and scenes that seemed like they were stolen from Benny Hill. This film did not really come together until the last few shots of the movie and made me wish that Tony Richardson had taken a different directorial approach.
Still, the main character perfectly summed up working class frustration, and I found him surprisingly relatable despite my pampered upper middle class background.
