Review of The Legend of Tarzan (2016) by Jacob B — 22 Sep 2017
Failing to live up to his Harry Potter films, The Legend of Tarzan shows that director David Yates may not quite be ready to direct stand-alone films just yet. Especially since he directed that Fantastic Beasts movie a few months after this movie and I liked it.
It stars a likable cast, decent action sequences and the movie is visually stunning every now and then. However, that doesn't excuse the pacing, editing and overreliance on CGI. Just because it worked with the live-action Disney Jungle Book doesn't mean that CG animals will guarantee a great movie.
At least it's not as bad as the monkeys in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The premise of the film a sort-of sequel to the Edgar Rice Burroughs story can be interesting but Yates seems unsure how to do it.
Once again, I blame the influence Harry Potter left on him. I don't hate The Legend of Tarzan but instead I find it rather "meh". I think I'm just going to stick with the animated Disney movie with all those amazing Phil Collins songs.
