Review of The Last Station (2009) by Laura S — 06 Mar 2010
I thought this was a beautiful film with solid performances by Plummer and Mirren, who have such great lines ("You think he's Christ! He thinks he's Christ!" "You don't need a husband.
You need a Greek chorus."). I couldn't get a handle on James McAvoy's character, and I didn't see anything new from Paul Giamatti (not surprisingly). I knew the basics of Tolstoy's spiritual crisis, the strain that put on his marriage, and his eventual abandonment of his life of privilege.
This film gave that story a visceral life which I found moving and fascinating. What I don't understand is why Christopher Plummer was nominated in the Best SUPPORTING Actor category. If this film is supposed to be about the struggles of McAvoy's character, it failed because Plummer's Tolstoy absolutely dominates on equal footing with Mirren's Sofya.
