Review of The Last Station (2009) by Paul C — 21 Jun 2010
The Last Station. 3 stars because it's really very solidly done. Though I thought some of the emotional development of the characters must've been edited out so I doubt it will win any technical awards.
Interesting to get a perspective on pre-Lenin Russia and to learn more about Tolstoy than the title of his most famous books.
Plummer looks like Tolstoy most of the time. Mirren: you can see her class, both real and imagined.
Giamatti plays another irritaing pr*ck, but he does it so well. McAvoy couldn't look any more like an Ashkenazi if he had been born into it though I'm not sure he is as there is no reference to it anywhere I could find.
And can anyone imagine living in luxury like that? Private rail car; private physician. Though people still do, don't they.
But, surprisingly and exposing my own limits, I didn't realise he'd started a "movement" nor done anything other than write. Back to class for me then.
