Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Tom M — 10 May 2010
This is a gripping film propelled by a pair of fantastic performances from Forrest Whitaker (as Amin) and James MaCavoy (as a young doctor, Nicholas Garrigan, who volunteers his services in Uganda and eventually is adopted by Amin as his family's personal physician and political colleague).
He soon learns that Amin's seemingly outgoing and friendly nature towards his people masks a sinister underbelly, and once implicated in his barbaric actions, Garrigan realizes he must escape. There are two of the most gut-wrenching scenes I have ever witnessed towards the conclusion, and while the structure of the film is a little misguided at times, the history that it projects is important for all audiences.
Definitely recommended!
