Review of The Last King of Scotland (2006) by Ehuisman — 20 Apr 2020
With the graphic and compelling depictions of violence and Whittaker's lifetime performance of Amin, The Last King of Scotland gets at least a couple of things right. It is all the more shame that it feels the need to slip into a sensationalized thriller escape.
It puts forth some decent cultural-ethnic touches, and then gets its all wrong in its notion of a happy ending, which is: all the white people are fortunately saved. In the end, there's just too much Hollywood at work for such a dark and brute historical reality.
