Review of The King of Marvin Gardens (1972) by Sean C — 16 Aug 2014
A good effort that just doesn't quite work out. Worth watching for the effective elements; the cinematography, Nicholson and Dern playing against type, the Ellen Burstyn/Julia Anne Robinson mother/daughter-mentor/protege dynamic, and occasional very good scenes.
The movie as a whole, though, doesn't live up to its best parts. The movie seemed very much like a play turned into a movie; so much so that I had to check and see if it was a play and I just didn't know it.
Seems it's not - but its interesting that the movie has so much of the feel of being adapted from a stage play.
