Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Ben B — 17 Sep 2007
Cassavetes is a hard one. It is never an easy watch with his films. However after making my way through his films, Shadows (good) Faces (better) A Woman Under The Influence (brilliant). I have to say that Bookie is my fave so far.
An interesting take on the gangster film, Cassavetes does everything to go against convention. The film is full of touching and intense scenes between individuals and he is never afraid to really delve into the small dramas in everyday situations.
A great performance from Gazzara and a suspenseful ride through LA make it compeling viewing.
