Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Matthew S — 09 Sep 2013
Cassavetes is truly always one to uphold whenever in conversation in cinema. His films are raw, genuine, and has deep human feelings blowing in an invisible whirlwind. Killing of a Chinese Bookie is a bit tough at times for me to grasp or explain, that's what make it a masterpiece.
At first, I kept reading it was a good crime noir, and knowing Cassavetes, he just doesn't make a simple good crime noir, he puts more into it than just that. He is Cassavetes for God sake! He is the master! I've only seen A Woman Under the influence, Shadows, Minnie and Moskowitz, Husbands, and this.
Knowing him for being someone who I'm inspired, his bravado and courage can not be put into words, just watch youtube interviews with him. This one is a one of kind.
