Review of The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) by Raül J — 24 May 2008
This is hard to rate. Cosmo is a truly great character and Gazzara's performance is phenomenal. Also the club he owns, the relation with his dancers or Mr. Sophistication, the way Cassavetes uses the colour are mesmerizing.
But on the other hand, the movie is clearly character driven, so the plot is secondary, resulting on a difficult first part to get into, and having some chaotic feeling in what regards to the rythym of the scenes, or that many moments are filmed in total darkness.
Personal, difficult but absorbing.
