Review of The Keep (1983) by Shaun B — 16 Dec 2012
Michael Mann. Nazis. Ian Mckellen. Gabriel Byrne. Scott Glenn. Jurgen Prochnow. A mysterious Romanian fortress built to contain, rather than defend. What could go wrong? Erm, a man in a rubber suit and a smoke machine.
Mann has disowned the film, which either suggests there were bitter production battles or he's just plain embarrassed by it. To be fair the first act is really very strong, as arrogant Nazis disturb an atmospheric fortified keep, deep in the Carpathian mountains designed to contain a mysterious ancient supernatural force.
But then things get silly, with rubber suited demons, Highlander-copying immortals, a ridiculous romance and some proper scenery chewing by actors who should know better.
