Review of The Keep (1983) by Alistair C — 16 Sep 2013
Too long, and flawed in many ways - nevertheless the power and originality of Mann's visuals and ideas carry this film and give it an enduring impact that lasts even today. This is a film from a different era: measured, atmospheric and grand. If you are younger than the generation who first saw it in the cinema and looking for some light entertainment, then there's every chance you will find it boring and incomprehensible.
But like John Boorman's 'Excalibur', the strangeness and deliberate theatricality give the film a hypnotic depth o experience that dumbed-down, CG-laden popcorn fare uniformly fail to provide today.
The unusual electronic and orchestral soundtrack by Tangerine Dream enhances the dream-like quality of the experience, although many find it jarring.
Recommended for receptive and open-minded viewers who are in the mood for something a bit different.
