Is it cringy? Yes, at times. Is it Chinese propaganda? Probably. Is the kid actually learning Karate? No. Besides all that, I really enjoyed watching it, especially the synergy between Dre and Mr. Han is very interesting to watch. Yes, while Jaden Smith can be "exhausting" at times, its not really that much of an issue.
There are many martial arts / competetive fighting movies that are better than this (Real Steel for example), but this movie is not only a good homage, but also good on its own.
