Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Vince L — 13 Jan 2013
"The Innkeepers" has everything going for it as a horror film except for one little thing: it isn't scary. The atmosphere is eerie, the music is haunting and the pacing is excellent and builds tension incredibly well, but it seems like director Ti West is showing too much restraint.
His film has the look and feel of a top-notch haunted house flick, but then he resorts to overused horror tactics like slamming doors and flickering lights in order to make us scared, and it just doesn't work.
He sets up his scenes so well that we're expecting greatness, but when it comes time to finally "Wow!" us, he cops out. In the end, what we get are a bunch of missed opportunities, and what makes it worse is that "The Innkeepers" is actually an enjoyable film.
It's very stylishly made and entertaining and likably acted by Sara Paxton and Pat Healy, but as a horror film, it misses the mark.
