Review of The Innkeepers (2011) by Brian S — 18 Jun 2018
This was heading for a three-star rating. Most of the film is entertaining enough, particularly the chemistry between lead characters Claire and Luke. Then Kelly McGillis walks onto the screen, and suddenly we're reminded why we don't see much of her these days.
She's a drain on the film. Then the writing starts getting off track, to the extent that the psychic gets the number of ghosts wrong (I know, counting to three can be treacherous) and finally there's that ending.
It's awful. It makes no sense given what's led up to it. I don't know what the critics saw in this, but when I watched The Innkeepers, I saw a by-the-numbers ghost story with a pleasant slacker twist that utterly loses its way and ends in a train wreck of a conclusion.
If you want to see what's good about this, watch the first 40 minutes, when it's all about Sara Paxton and Pat Healy. As soon as Kelly McGillis starts on her psychic healer spiel, turn the thing off!
