Review of The Hurricane (1999) by Joel M — 19 Jan 2010
Awsome biopic about Ruben "hurricane" Carter. Denzel gives in my opinion his best performance (haven't watched Malcom X yet). He really captures the true essence of angry wild hotshot youngster on top of the world.
When he gets arrested and endures the hardships of life in prison he transforms into a bitter quiet man who is a little hostile towards the white race. He then undergoes another transformation when he meets the kid who is writing him and becomes accepting of the white race and shows hope for justice.
Really what got me was Denzel's performance and the story. The directing was good and liev schrieber was alright naturally because he was playing a canadian activist so the role of asshole was pretty much effortless for him.
Denzel did win the golden globe for his portrayal here and probably should have won the oscar, but I didn't see American Beauty so I can't say how good Spacey was in that.
