Review of The Hunger Games (2012) by Mallory%20 P — 05 Dec 2018
Hunger Games, directed by American film director Gary Ross, is a movie about a dystopian society called Panem that is ruled under the iron fist of a dictator (i.e., President Snow). The Hunger Games is a competition held each year by the government to remind Panem residents that rebelling against the capital is pointless. Although Ross shows that the government has tremendous control over the districts, he also shows the citizens can exert small displays of power; which is human nature. This movie was an example of the classic story of the "weak one," as portrayed by Katniss and the other tributes, battling the "strong one," as portrayed by President Snow.
Ross demonstrates how strong President Snow is and how weak the residents in the districts are through several graphic scenes. These scenes allow the audience to visualize the power of the President and the Capitol. One example is the scene where President Snow is talking to the Game Maker about containing hope. The President makes it clear the Game Maker is in danger if the game does not end according to the President's plan. Another example is when district eleven is wholly destroyed after they tried voicing their opposition towards the government. These examples demonstrate the force and strength the government has over the districts.
Even though Ross demonstrated multiple scenes where the government is putting an incredible force on the citizens, he indeed showed how the underdog came out to try and prove the President wrong. One example of this is the ending scene where it is only Katniss and Peeta left in the game, Katniss pulls out poisonous berries. She is trying to prove the Game Maker wrong by not letting him win. As soon as the Game Maker sees this event happening, he immediately stops the game and lets Katniss and Peeta win. This example shows how Katniss was willing to die with her fellow tribute to prove the government wrong. This is an essential scene, because every movie after the Hunger Games, the government is trying to get back at Katniss for breaking the rules of the games.
Gary Ross creates a fascinating film about how an underdog comes on top of the giant. Ross paints many pictures to show the force and strength of the government and the courage of the underdog . Hunger Games was well made with thoughtful scenes, specific events, and a memorable love story. This movie should be seen with mature eyes and a mature mind because of the love, torture, and political scenes. Since the book had a few violent moments, a recommended audience would go to sixth graders because that is the age where students are starting to mature. Despite the torturous and bloody scenes, the rating would have to be 4/5.
