Review of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) by Michael Y — 14 Jul 2010
Based on the horror/romance novel by Victor Hugo, this classic adaptation from 1939 gives a fantastic cathedral shot, wonderful lighting and great acting.
This is a wonderful story about love and the people who love us. The main focus of this story is on the Gypsy Esmeralda, who while trying to find a way to ask the king of France to give her people freedom, she finds four different men who fall in love with her. One who will give his life for her, one who will take her life if he doesn't have her, one who she loves but is ugly on the inside, and one who is ugly on the outside but has goodness inside. This movie's story about love, society and politics is very interesting.
The technical side of this movie is just as great. Shot infront of a beautiful cathedral, and the lighting in the film was beautiful. The make up done for Quasimodo was done extremely well. They sure don't do makeup like they used to back then.
Though this movie doesn't exactly have the same ending as the book does. But that's understandable. The ending to the book was beyond creepy. But this movie still delivers an intriguing classic story done very well. Watching classic horror movies like these are good for the soul, and this one remains a classic.
