Review of The House of the Devil (2009) by Syed R — 22 Sep 2012
Well made? Yes. Scary? Eh. Completely and utterly pointless? A million times yes. House of the Devil is a throwback to 70s and 80s horror, right down to the zoom shots and freeze frames for the yellow opening credits.
Sure, it's endearing, but nostalgia can't mask the massive flaws in logic, acting and story of the characters and script that this movie tries to casually pass off. Countless questions are left at the end, with almost nothing directly answered.
Sorry, I've been betrayed once by Lost; I can't take a "well, just figure it out for yourself or whatever lol" ending from anything ever again. It's a very slow burn of a movie where nothing happens for the majority of it.
(And I mean NOTHING.) There are some creepy angles and there's a little bit of suspense every once in a while, but all around, this movie is just an exercise in tedium and pointless absurdity. Also, this movie houses the worst, most incompetent Satanists ever.
