Review of The Hospital (1971) by Joe K — 26 Jul 2008
Disturbing, but really compelling in a frightening way. George C. Scott is his usual combative, anti-heroic self and he is so broken and cynical that it is easier to be viscerally repelled than it is to like him.
Diana Rigg is a surprise and her performance leaves you wondering how she avoided being one of the premier film actresses of the '70s and '80s (she was busy being one of the premier stage actresses of the '70s and '80s, at least in England).
This movie is not for the faint of heart or those seeking a feel-good movie, but it is surprisingly resonant with the health care crises we face today. I'm still not sure if this is an "issues" movie or a George C. Scott vehicle, but in the end it doesn't matter. See it.
