Review of The Hoax (2006) by G C — 20 Sep 2009
Sound performances by Gere, Molina and Co. highlight a surprisingly true-ish story.
Author Clifford Irving pulled off one of the greatest hoaxes of the 20th century, almost. This tells the true story of Irving himself and shows how Irving began to adopt the personality of the man he mimicked. As another viewer pointed out, the movie was well paced. To put it simply, everything made sense.
The only fly in the ointment is that Irving himself disputes some of what was represented as true in this movie. The irony is that in reality, Hughes played Irving like a GD violin and Irving probably just didn't like it.
The movie intertwines everything superbly well and the depth of the characters is satisfying. As another wise reviewer said, there were no clear heroes or villains, the way a movie should be.
