Review of The Hoax (2006) by Caleb M — 17 Feb 2010
An entertaining and timely look at lies and corporate power through an engrossing historical story. Gere is a perfectly slick and believable liar, and Molina plays his sweaty, nervous partner in crime as a nice counterbalance.
Hallstrom is obviously interested in the parallels between Huges' power and the politicians and corporations of today, and the commentary blends wonderfully with the film's comedic elements. These modestly budgeted quality films seem to be few and far between nowadays, but it's always great to catch one, I just wish they got wider releases, because these deserve theatrical showings more so than trivial junk like From Paris With Love or When in Rome.
