Review of The Green Berets (1968) by Mario G — 05 Oct 2010
Well intentioned but sadly misguided film of the effort in Vietnam by the US Green Berets. Take away this and it is still a propoganda film, glamorizing the US presence in the asian conflict.
A war that literally tore the nation apart at the time, the lessons of the Vietnam conflict haunt us today in another third world country. Yet the incurably hawk Wayne who directed this loser and Warner Bros. who backed it must have believed their own reviews as they both portrayed a nation on a country saving mission (sound familiar?).
As a film, never mind the plot, this suffered a thousand deaths for me. 20% rating is generous indeed. For those that did not live at the time, be glad. Folks like Wayne, who never actually served in the military, kept this war humming along much longer than necessary... 50,000 US deaths necessary. A monumental epitaph to a very unpopular war.
REST IN PEACE.
