Review of The Great Silence (1968) by Jan B — 11 Feb 2012
Featuring a host of memorable moments, and a powerful hero despite his quiet nature, The Great Silence is a worthy entry into the Western canon. Set apart by its winter setting, it's always fun to see how a foreign culture interprets such an American genre as the Western.
Italian director Sergio Corbucci knows exactly what he's doing, mixing blood-red violence with surprisingly nuanced moments, all played out by well-crafted characters. It's atmospherically artistic but retains its entertainment value, even in the face of its famed conclusion, which continues to polarize audiences.
