Review of The Great Gatsby (1974) by Shelley G — 21 Dec 2007
Okay - there are great movies made from great novels - and there are decent movies made from great novels. "Gatsby" the movie is in the latter category. Great attention to detail in order to invoke the period, but, ultimately, a faithful adaptation of the novel is really not possible because Fitzgerald's prose is what has endowed the literary work as "The Great American Novel".
But the color-styling and art direction - and the soundtrack (scored by Nelson Riddle) are what make movie almost a piece of living history - and an interestingly ironic love story. My suggestion: read the book first (maybe even do a paper on it.
...).
