Review of The Gay Divorcee (1934) by Leighton T — 19 Sep 2011
Astaire and Rogers's first film as headliners is a beautiful little comedy that set up the rest of their collaborations together. It's a fresh type of comedy that set the standard for the 30's and 40's type of these comedies.
The music, the comedic timings of all the actors, the story all come together nicely (although sometimes the music does stand out a bit too much for me from the regular story going on - The Continental being 17 minutes long).
The film's known for introducing the famous song "Night and Day" and winning the first Oscar for Original Song (for said Continental). While not the tip of their iceberg, it's certainly enjoyable, entertaining, and overall a sharp comedic musical.
