Review of The Gay Divorcee (1934) by Matt H — 05 Sep 2013
The "best" of the Astaire/Rogers films I've seen so far, cinematically. Also the funniest, would hold up on its own I think even without the chemistry of Rogers and Astaire. Not the best musically, although there are three pretty memorable dance sequences; but the "The Continental" at the end spends too much of its time without Ginger and Fred dancing - a glaring flaw.
But all can be forgiven when being a truly light and fun film. Astaire starts out a little too creepy and stalker-y; this is one one of his earlier films and you can tell he hadn't learned one of the essential keys to being a top level male classical Hollywood lead: the woman has to chase the man (even if in reality it wouldn't make sense).
Rogers is very beautiful in this as well.
