Review of The Fury (1978) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
Tonight's review features a 1978 classic entitled "The Fury.".
When an Ex-FBI agent's psychically-gifted son is kidnapped secretly by his best friend, Peter Sandza must search the world over to rescue his boy Robin. As the same time, a young girl named Gillian is experiencing psychic developments of her own, and discovers a connection to the kidnapped Robin. Together Peter and Gillian must find Robin and rescue him from becoming the brutal pawn of the a mysterious government agency. This is old school horror. Not so much horror as just creepy sounds and psychic special effects. The movie efficiently hooks you with great characters and a decent plot line. Unfortunately the changes in circumstance are never truly explored, and could've made for some great sequences. We are never really told what "The Fury" actually is, unless it happens to have nothing to do with psychic powers, and rather just a psychotic breakdown of a teenage boy. Interest wanes slowly but surely as the story moves on, but hasn't completely left by the end. The acting was all top-notch, and the dialogue was quite flawless. This can be summed up as an unsuccessful attempt to mix psychological science with action, and therefore doesn't deliver the correct atmosphere for either. Only true old school (70's) horror/suspense fans will truly appreciate this. Almost like a poor attempt at reproducing "Carrie". So I must give "The Fury" 6.5 mysterious happenings out of 10.
