Review of The Entity (1982) by Robert H — 12 Mar 2013
While I'm not sold on how much of this film is based on a "true story" it is very similar in architecture as Poltergeist. The big difference here is that this is a much more mature story involving ghost rape... yes, ghost rape.
The cast helps this film immensly as it is the acting that truly sells this film. Hershey puts in a fantastic performance of portraying an assault where there isn't one and being ulterly ashamed, afraid, disgusted by the events yet having no defense as not only is it a ghost assailant, but nobody believes her.
Though the film could have gone extremely dark with the subject matter, it manages to stay above water as it treads the subject matter lightly while still showing multiple rape scenes.
The Entity isn't for everybody, but it is one of those hidden gems that sits in the middle of the spectrum between hardcore horror and light hearted spook film.
