Review of The End of the Affair (1999) by Stephanie C — 12 Jan 2008
This is not a perfect movie: the music is loud at times, and the love scenes too long for some, but I love it anyway.
I love the way Sara's clothes stand out from the muted backgrounds, and I love the use of hidden perspective.
Most of all though, I love that as in all of Graham Greene's writing, humanity and religious thought are dealt with in a respectful and honest way, by a person who struggled with himself the way his characters do. The film Bendrix is a more comprehensible/empathetic character than in the book, and for me this adaptation worked well.
If you've seen The English Patient as many times as I have, you'll notice that many of the lines and pacings are nearly identical. Was Neil Jordan affected by TEP? I'm not sure.
The other thing I truly love about this film, is the unique friendship between Miles and Bendrix: Quite interesting, layered, and in the end Sweet.
