Review of The End of the Affair (1999) by Brian S — 02 Oct 2010
I enjoyed the book more, mostly because it has richer details and character development, but this film still captures the key essence of the story. the characters are quite often shamefully detestable, but in their massive flaws they're still recognizably human.
like Brief Encounter, this is a story about a sordid and unhappy affair that does much more to damage lives than enrich them. also a great religious element too, which I think the film mostly overlooks.
the overall quality of the movie didn't impress me too much--probably not my first choice for actors or director, and the technical elements were certainly nothing impressive. still, it's a decent adaptation of a great piece of literature.
