Review of The End of the Affair (1999) by Alex T — 23 Aug 2010
I thought this was a lovely film. Graceful dialogue, appropriate costuming(and at times, lack thereof), beautiful music, and a brilliant cast. Stephen Rea was great as Henry, the husband that loves his wife but doesn't show it in a manner fitting for her personality, and he's too timid to react to the affair that happens around him.
Julianne Moore was lovely and elegant, playing her part well but at times not with the emotion I would have hoped. Ralph Fiennes I must, as always, praise for a job done magnificently. Few can do jealous and brooding quite as well as he, and make the character likable at the same time.
He and Moore formed a perfectly convincing relationship, and I found myself wishing she really would have left Henry for Maurice. It was just a simply lovely film, one that I have watched more than once in the past few days.
