Review of The Duellists (1977) by Steve W — 18 Oct 2014
Passion, obsession, and honour are loosely explored in Ridley Scott's directorial debut. Two Napoleonic soldiers duel after a ridiculous scuffle, and in turn create a rivalry that seems to be unbreakable.
Every so often, they meet up and duel, mostly the hateful Feraud, who likes to project his hatred on the soft spoken D'Hubert. Its the performances and setting that are really memorable in this film, as the countryside is simply breathtaking in its final shot.
Carradine and Keitel play two sides of the coin perfectly, one a distinct gentleman, the other a savage who hides behind the mask of honour. With suspenseful duels and strong acting, The Duellists is excellent cinema.
