Review of The Duellists (1977) by Lesley B — 05 Jun 2006
THE DUELLISTS (1978, Scott).
normally I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott's work, of course there are a few exceptions and the duellists happens to be one of them. even with his first film, Scott is able to show his ability for great visuals. but unfortunately they don't help the film from being quite boring. I couldn't get into either of the main characters or the story. the editing throughout was quite bad...nothing seemed to flow. with a period piece that has both poetic music and cinematography, your editing needs compliment that, and here it does the opposite. there were some great british supporting cast here, but the two leads didn't fit in at all. their american accents were way too distracting. honestly, if it weren't for the cinematography, I probably would have turned it off.
