Review of The Dressmaker (2015) by Iain M — 09 Nov 2015
Very quirky Australian film. Largely centred on a time honoured 'prodigal son' premise ... although the son is a daughter.
A good mix of humour, drama, some Australian vernacular, a tiny box of intrigue and some classic overacting and hamming it up from Barry Otto and a very well-played Hugo Weaving as the transvestite sergeant of police.
All a tad weird for its 1950s setting somewhere in Australia's central Victoria.
It comes off well when the plot threads connect at the last possible moment.
Nice to see the wonderful Sarah Snook standing up so well to the pro (Winslett) and the veteran (Judy Davis). And.
Shane Bourne rose to the occasion as the interconnecting catalyst and goad.cccc.
